Thank you for co creating with me. I noticed readers landed on my Forbes column from your newsletter. Do you believe AI Agents will end up part of what we professionally own as individuals ?

I’m loving your work and I hope to refer to your work whenever possible. My Substack is meant to really help digest all the AI news and what I think it means for businesses and help leaders connect the dots.

To your question, I’m not sure what it’s going to look like. I think people owning them would be the most equitable. There doesn’t seem to be a structure or incentive right now for that. And untangling the IP is messy. It would be neat if there was a layer on top of Agent-making, where it was set up like GDPR laws with personal data, like when you leave, you can extract everything you put into the system. Essentially, a salary is just buying your time. And building a way to negotiate the sale of that IP when you leave.

After reading your article, I've been trying to think about how to operationalize it with an AI transformation work and, as a small step at least, try to figure out different compensation models for employees building the AI transformation.

I think there's a positive incentive for companies to figure out how employees can bring their whole selves to an AI transformation. Without this piece, it's going to be difficult and they will not be as successful.

I would actually love to measure this across companies based on the cultural dimensions and how this is set up and the gains they could make with AI transformation.

Although I think the one way around it is to let people loose on innovation and build something new and great. Their drive for impact alone could make them want to contribute. Employees can then take what they did from that company and do it for the next company and essentially have to rebuild all of their IP for the next company. At least they have that track record to plan their next job. But I don’t think that’s the best case scenario.

Another model could just be higher compensation, like AI consulting rates are between $250 and $2,000 per hour because of what you're leaving them with. It would be interesting to apply this type of model to people involved in the transformation to really compensate them appropriately. In this value exchange, I am essentially selling my IP for a much higher rate. But there's no ill will or feeling of extraction with the clients that I work with, given a compensation model that feels equitable.
